Lewiston Armory

The Lewiston Armory is located at 65 Central Ave in Lewiston. It was built in 1922- 1923. The architects who designed the building were Miller and Mayo. There is a plaque in the Armory that says it is dedicated to Lewiston Veterans of All Wars.

It was built by the National Guard to be headquarters for a battalian. There was a fallout shelter there and surplus food. The National Guard kept equipment there and had offices and a firing range in the basement.

Today the Armory is the home of the Lewiston Recreation Department. They have their offices and store equipment necessary to maintain their playgrounds. Many activities such as basketball, cheering, and volleyball take place at the Armory.

At different times of the year craft shows, tradeshows, and other events take place. I like the craft shows best. I like looking at the different stuff at the craft show.

Before the Recreation Department took over the Armory the School Department had its offices there. It was also used as the gym for the high school and vocational classes. It was right next to the old high school.

Many events during the 60's and 70's such as the circus, popular music groups, and performances of famous people were held there.

I learned that it's hard to find information on common places.
