Bates Mill
Benjamin Bates put a lot of money, work, interest, and time into building the Bates Mill from 1852 through 1919. It is located in the heart of downtown Lewiston.
The Bates Mill helped outfit the Union Army during the Civil War.
The Bates Mill was important to Lewiston because this business made cotton and wool. Its products were sold world-wide.
The current purpose for the Bates Mill today is to provide space for new businesses. New businesses that are located there are Peoples Heritage Bank, TeleMark , Floor Systems, Parties Plus, Davinci's Eatery, Husson College, and The Creative Photographic Arts Center.
The Bates Mill is important for the people of Lewiston to have jobs.
I learned that the city's objective is to create a place made up of a whole bunch of many different companies. It will have manufacturing space, retail stores, office space, commercial space, as well as space for educational and cultural uses.
I was surprised when I found out that there are 11 mills that make up the Bates Mill.
