Central Maine Medical Center

Lewiston and Auburn originally had no hospitals, and people were dying or getting sick. Some women were having babies and they had no place to go. So, Dr. Hill built the Central Main Medical Center hospital with the help of congressmen Nelson Diggley. The hospital was built in 1891. It was called Central Maine General hospital. It was on the line of Lewiston and Auburn cities. The C.M.M.C. hospital had no other place to go so it was built near the railroad station.

Before it was the Central Maine General hospital it was originally a 2 story high wooden building known as S.R. Bearce Estate. This building was owned by a local ice dealer. It was important because Lewiston had no other hospitals. Today the C.M.M.C. hospital is a central hospital for people who need surgery, or who are ill. There are a lot more people needing surgery today then there was in 1891 when it was first built.

The most interesting thing that I learned while doing this was that the original building was only 2 stories high and made out of wood.
