Libbey Mill

The Libbey mill was built to be a cotton mill by a guy named Captain Daniel Howan. He was a local contractor and his crew built it. It was built in 1845. Libbey Mill's original name was Lewiston Falls Cotton Mill. Several buildings joined together to make Libbey Mill.

The Libbey Mill is located on Main Street in the downtown real estate.

The original purpose was a cotton textile. It employed 300-400 people. The mill was important to Lewiston because it sold lots of fabrics. It's unoccupied and because of a fire it will be demolished. It will probably be demolished the summer of the year 2000.

Its future now is to be torn it down. The mill will be a site for future development. Libbey Mill is not important in anyway now.

I learned Libbey mill burned on December 13,1972 after a chemical explosion. I spoke with the owner and I know this will be the site of future development in Lewistion.
