           Lewiston is located in central Maine. The Androscoggin River separates Lewiston and Auburn, Greene, Sabattus, Durham, and Lisbon are the towns that form the boundaries circling Lewiston. The city lies halfway between the Augusta, the capital city, and Portland, Maine's largest city. Lewiston has a population of 36,830, add in Auburn's 22,997 residents, and the Twin Cities of Lewiston-Auburn are not too far from Portland's 63,123 residents.

     Downtown Lewiston is located in an area between Main Street and Lisbon Street. There you will find banks, credit unions, law offices, restaurants as well as retail stores and other businesses that help to serve the communty.
City Hall, the local newspaper office, the police department, the fire department, the court house, the offices of the school department, the post office, and library are also located here.


     The City Park is located right across from City Hall. It is an eight acres park that was originally donated by the Franklin Company for that purpose. It includes a gazebo, a water fountain, an olympic size swimming pool, a playground, as well as two monuments to Lewiston's fallen sons.
Civil War Memorial

he Civil War Soliders Monument is located near the northeastern corner of the park. It was designed by Franklin Simmons. The names of 112 soldiers who died in the Civil War are engraved on the granite base. The City Hall and the Old DeWitt Hotel are visible in the background of the picture to the right.

ocated at the southwestern corner of the park is a monument dedicated to the brave men who gave their lives in the Korean War.
          The only body of water lying entirely in Lewiston is No Name Pond near the Sabuttus Road. It is one mile long and half a mile wide.
          The city covers an area of a little over 35 square miles. It is about 111/2miles from north to south and 51/2 miles from east to west. The terrain of the land is low rolling hills and meadows, which slope to the Androscoggin River. Mt. David is 389 feet above sea level. It is the highest point in the city and offers a view of the White Mountains.
    Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary sets aside 228 acres of land free from urban effects. A walk through the woodlands of Thorncrag brings you into a rural setting containing a wide variety of trees, plants, and wildlife. It has several small ponds and 13 miles of walking trails. Thorncrag is located off Montello Street. It is a piece of the country tucked into the middle of the city.
          Lewiston residents enjoy four seasons. Each season brings a change in climate, scenery, and temperature. The average January temperature is 19º;F and the average July temperature is 79ºF. The first frost is expected around mid-October and the last frost is usually in mid-May. Normal rainfall is 44 inches and Lewiston recieves about 72 inches of snow a year. Of course these amount of percipitation vary from year to year.
