The Snowshoe Festival

Les Raquetteurs

The Franco-American culture has been felt in Lewiston. Long ago the French Canadian Immigrants made up the greatest part of the population. They began many celebrations that were part of their ancestors traditions in Canada.

Once there use to be a winter festival in Lewiston that was sponsored by the members of the Le Montagnard Snowshoe Club. This winter festival changed the city park into a world of ice sculptures.

Many snowshoers from Canada came to Lewiston early in February for this winter festival. The weekend festival included a parade. Each snowshoe club dressed in colorful uniforms paraded down the main street. There was also a snowshoe race to capture the "Ice Palace" or the "City Hall". It was a celebration of local French Culture.

The weekend had bands and choral groups performing. The winter festival ended with a parade down Lisbon Street and up to mass in Saint Peter and Paul Church.
