News & Information
Program of Studies for School Year 2010- 2011 is Online!!
Counselors will visit students in classes the week of March 15th to begin the scheduling process for next year.
Students should remember three things as they plan their courses for next year.
1) Graduation requirements
2) College entrance requirements
3) Career exploration opportunities
To help students with decisions about courses for next year, we have posted the Program of Studies online in a .pdf format. Within the menu of web pages for this site on the left, you will find a "Program Of Studies" folder. Click on the link in the folder to view the Program of Studies. We hope all students talk over their choices with their teachers, parents and counselors.
Financial Aid Award Comparison Worksheet and Workshop
This is the time of year when our seniors are receiving acceptance letters and their financial aid award letters. Financial aid packages are a combination of scholarships, grants, loans and work study. Different colleges will put together a package including different proportions of each of those categories of aid and it can make it difficult to compare one aid package to another. In general, the more scholarships or grants (you don't have to pay those back) the better. A package from one college may look larger, but if it is mostly loans, it might not be that good a deal. Here is a worksheet from the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) that will help compare award letters. Click on the link to download a .pdf of the form.

LHS has set up a Financial Aid Package workshop with the Finance Authority of Maine for parents and students on April 27th at 6:30 in Room B109. Trish Malloy from FAME will lead us through th eprocess of comparing financial aid packages to help families determione what is the best deal for them. We hope you can join us.

Study Skills for Freshmen
First semester counselors met with freshmen in team flex to talk about study skills. Getting organized and making good use of your time and study techniques can help make the difference between passing and excelling. Check out Mrs. Aschauer's powerpoint from her study skills presentation with Red team. A .pdf version of her powerpoint is on the "Download forms and documents" page.
FAFSA Problems with MACS
We have been alerted by the Finance Authority of Maine that some students have had difficulty using the FAFSA on a MAC computer when using Firefox as their web browser. Apparently they have selected the 2010-2011 FAFSA, but the 2009-2010 has come up. Be sure to double check and make sure you are using th e2010-2011 FAFSA if you will be a freshman in college next fall.
Need a consultation about Financial Aid?
Again this year, LHS is very fortunate to have the services of David Mahoney, Associate Director of Student Financial Services from Bates College to meet with families about financial aid. David is available by appointment during December and January to meet and privately discuss any questions you may have about your financial aid situation. If you would like to arrange an appointment with him, please call 795-4190 ext. 2199.
FAFSA Worksheet available from FAME
All college bound seniors should file a FAFSA as soon after January 1, 2010 as possible. To get started on that it helps to use FAFSA's worksheet. The 2010/2011 worksheet is not yet available from FAFSA.com. but FAME ( the Finance Authority of Maine) has loaded a .pdf of the 2010/2011 worksheet onto their web site. You can download the .pdf by clicking HERE
Maine Parent Federation
Parent Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs) are a statewide resource center for parents and educators funded by the U.S. Department of Education. PIRCs bring parents, educators and those that work with families a wealth of information about helping children get ready for school and succeed in school, from the early grades through high school. PIRC has generously given LHS materials for parents to display and distribute. The free information is outside the Guidance Office and the Aspirations Lab
We invite you to visit our LHS Parents' Page.
The LHS Parents' Page contains a ton of great information including Daily Announcements, Directions to using the Powerschool Parent Portal, a copy of the Student Handbook and a list of scholarships available to students. Please check it regularly for useful information
